Planning for Success

Academic Development

It’s never too early to start planning for your future academic endeavors. To get the most out of your four years at high school, planning is essential for the winding road that will ultimately bring you to college. The courses you take, even as a freshman, play an extremely important part of your college application, so each one should be selected carefully. The same goes for the clubs you join, the sports you play, the jobs you take on, and so forth. You want to make the most out of these four years—and even more so, the years that will follow. Talk to parents, counselors, and coaches here at EPT to help build a roadmap that will prepare for an awesome experience in high school.

It’s always a good idea to have set specific goals when planning. For example, whether or not you know you have a career path in mind as an eighth-grader, selecting courses based on a general direction will shape you in a way that makes you excel in a certain area. Remember, plans can and should always change as you change, but planning without direction will only lead to a muddle of continued uncertainty. Put as much direction into your plans as you can; plan to play a sport for four years, and know that you can always change your mind if you decide it’s not for you.

That being said, it’s also never too late to start planning. If you’re a junior in high school and getting ready to start college applications, you can still make efforts to prepare for college. Apply to a variety of colleges with different styles so that you have more options to decide from when your spring of senior year comes along; retake tests like the SAT, ACT, and SAT subject tests to get yourself a last-minute boost to your application. There is always something more you can do to prepare for the future. Planning ahead is a habit that will affect your entire life, and the earlier you get in the habit of doing so, the better!
