How to Have a Good College Visit

College Admissions

The summer is the perfect time to help narrow down your choices for colleges! A good way to get a feel for each university is to make a visit. Here are some tips to make sure that you get the most out of each visit.

  1. Sign up for an official tour, but understand that it won’t be too personal
  2. College tours are usually large groups of prospective students and their parents, and sometimes even siblings. Amidst the chaos, try to focus on what the guide is saying. They usually have fun facts and are experts on details of the university. If you have the opportunity, try to get a moment with the guide so that you can ask any questions that you have.
  3. Have questions!
  4. You should consider what means the most to you in your decision about where to go to school. Is student-faculty ratio important? Greek life? Student culture? Specific extracurriculars? Having questions that are specific to your preferences will help you gather the most information on each visit
  5. Wander off on your own.
  6. The official tour is really useful, but it has its limitations. After you’re done, if you don’t have a flight to catch, wander off on campus. Walking around, interacting with students other than guides, can be incredibly useful in perceiving the attitude and culture of the campus.
