Vocabulary is an important part of many standardized tests such as the ISEE, SAT, and ACT and even tests you take on a regular basis within school. Students often feel overwhelmed by big lists of foreign vocabulary words. But learning these vocabulary list is essential to be successful on these big tests because they take up a good portion of your score. At first, people may think that all they have to do for vocabulary is look up the definitions and memorize them, but it is significantly better to actually have an understanding of the word beyond the dictionary definition.

1. Use vocabulary words in a sentence

A way to do this is to use the words in a sentence. Dictionaries often give sentence examples with the word and so do many other websites. Oftentimes, a dictionary definition gives you a definition that only a sentence can further explain. Once you see a word used within the context of a sentence, it may make more sense to you.

2. Study synonyms

Also, synonyms are a great way to study vocabulary words. That way you can make a connection between words you already know with a word that you have never seen before. These synonyms also help with tests like the ISEE and SAT because those tests consist of sections in which you pick the synonym for the vocabulary words.

If you study vocabulary words within sentences and study their synonyms, your brain will quickly absorb all of these new strange words and you will be on your way to a great score!
